About Psi Iota Xi

(pronounced sigh iota zi)

president dangleIn 1897, Psi Iota Xi was founded by the joining together of women to make a difference in the lives of individuals one community at a time.  The original intent was to bring more diverse cultural experiences to their communities. Music and art were introduced to these towns with the funds that the women raised. As the organization grew, literature and literacy became an added focus. Now the sphere of interest has grown to include helping those with speech and hearing difficulties.

Psi Iota Xi is a network of friends dedicated to helping others with time, money and love and meeting needs whether cultural, educational, social, or financial.  Every chapter is different since every community’s needs are different.  Psi Iota Xi endeavors to create a circle of influence and dedication so that it might meet the diverse needs of individuals, families, communities, and in expanding areas of our states and nation.

Our Dedication to Speech and Hearing

1938 marked the beginning of Psi Iota Xi’s dedication to the field for which we have become nationally known – speech pathology and audiology.  We were the first organization to concentrate efforts for speech and hearing correction among children and to appropriate funds for this project.

Traveling Speech Clinic

The first commitment to speech and hearing took place in 1938 when Psi Otes voted to give a $10,000 grant to finance a traveling speech screening clinic which visited every Indiana school during a two-year period.  In the three years the clinic existed, 6,000 children were tested.  As a direct result of this, the Indiana State Legislature passed a bill requiring speech correction in the state’s public schools.  Following this program, a residence clinic was established at Indiana University.

Other Early Speech-Hearing Projects

In 1946, Psi Iota Xi began support of Ball State University’s Summer Boarding Speech and Hearing Clinic for 8- to 12-year-old children.  In 1953, Psi Iota Xi gave a $2,000 grant to the Speech and Hearing Kindergarten in Indianapolis.  This was a first effort to bring help to the pre-school child with a hearing loss.  Then, at the 1957 National Convention, we voted to cooperate with Purdue University in starting a recruitment program for Speech and Hearing Therapists in the form of a “Pre-College Institute”, available to high school junior girls.   As a result of the success of this program, Ball State University, Western Michigan University, Indiana University, and Ohio State University followed in this project. In 1977, the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology gained our financial support for a series of special workshops for hearing impaired adults and later for the publication of their research papers.  At this time, recruitment of speech therapists and continuing education programs for practicing clinicians became a priority.

American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHF)

In 1977, Psi Iota Xi began its long-term association with the American Speech-Language Hearing Foundation (ASHF).  Together we developed a brochure entitled “How Does Your Child Hear and Talk?” designed to aid parents, children’s doctors, and anyone in the speech and hearing profession throughout the United States.  The brochure was distributed nationally, translated into Spanish, and received a national award for excellence in graphic arts.

For several years, Psi Iota Xi granted cash awards to ASHF annually, to be used either of two ways:  a Doctoral Candidate Grant or a Research Grant in a continuing education program.  These awards are given to outstanding recipients in this field of human communications.

Honorary Conferred Status was given to Nancy J. Minghetti, Executive Director, ASHF in 1990.
